PROGRAM
Please join us at Roosevelt House as we welcome a very special guest, U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), who will speak about his new book Captured: The Corporate Infiltration of American Democracy. Sen. Whitehouse offers an eye-opening take on what corporate influence looks like today from the Senate Floor, adding a first-hand perspective to Jane Mayer’s recent Dark Money.
Sen. Whitehouse combines history, legal scholarship, and personal experience to provide the first hands-on, comprehensive explanation of what’s gone wrong, exposing multiple avenues through which our government, he argues, has been infiltrated and disabled by corporate powers. Captured traces the centuries-long struggle between corporate power and individual liberty that has shaped American politics, and reveals the ways in which corporate power works: exerting influence (and sometimes revenge) on elected representatives, or judicial appointments, and on regulatory agencies. In Captured, Sen. Whitehouse argues that corporate power has created an “alternate reality” on key public health and safety issues, including climate change.
We look forward to seeing you at this important event.
