Dr. Woolhandler has earned degrees from Stanford University (BA Economics), LSU Medical Center (MD), and U.C. Berkeley (MPH) as well as an honorary degree from Harvard (MA). She has worked as a primary care internist for decades, has authored over a hundred scientific articles on health and health care policy, and is a well-known advocate for non-profit, single-payer national health insurance. She is currently a professor of public health at CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College.
