PROGRAM
Roosevelt House invites you to The Inaugural “Little Aunt Dora” Public Lecture honoring the memory of former, longtime Hunter College Professor Dora Askowith, a professor of history, religion, culture, Jewish studies, and women’s studies at Hunter College from 1912-1957, featuring legendary diplomat and negotiator Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, author of The Art of Diplomacy: How American Negotiators Reached Historic Agreements that Changed the World.
“Over my years in public life, I have known few people who have better combined Stu Eizenstat’s commitment to doing the right thing with his exceptional skills in getting things done.” – President Bill Clinton
Full of compelling, insider details on the formation of several peace agreements, Eizenstat’s book—The Art of Diplomacy: How American Negotiators Reached Historic Agreements that Changed the World— provides lessons for the resolution of international conflicts. From the treaty to end the Vietnam War to the Kyoto Protocols and the Iranian Nuclear Accord, Eizenstat’s expertise includes first-hand insight into nearly every major international agreement in modern history.
As the Oval Office becomes a venue for what many are calling “cringe diplomacy,” “bullying,” or worse, please join us for a timely and urgent discussion of how diplomatic efforts on the part of previous presidents have led to significant—and lasting—progress.
Note: All attendees will receive a copy of Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat’s new book!
Hon. Stuart Eizenstat served as Chief White House Domestic Policy Adviser to President Carter. In the Clinton Administration, he was U.S. Ambassador to the European Union; Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade; Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs; and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. More than any other person, he helped bring Holocaust justice and memory onto the world’s agenda, as Special Representative of President Clinton and Secretary of State Albright on Holocaust-Era Issues, and then in the Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations, as a key adviser on Holocaust Issues to Secretaries of State Clinton, Kerry, Pompeo, and Blinken. Eizenstat is also the author of President Carter: The White House Years; The Future of the Jews: How Global Forces are Impacting the Jewish People, Israel, and its Relationship with the United States; and Imperfect Justice: Looted Assets, Slave Labor, and the Unfinished Business of World War II.
The “Little Aunt Dora” Public Lecture Series is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Dora Askowith by her family, initiated by her great-niece Patti Askwith Kenner.
