PROGRAM
Please join us at Roosevelt House as we welcome Evan Thomas, one of the most respected historians and journalists writing today. He will discuss his new book, First: Sandra Day O’Connor, an intimate, inspiring, and authoritative biography of Sandra Day O’Connor, America’s first female Supreme Court justice.
This three-dimensional portrait of O’Connor reflects the importance of her personal relationships, as well as the judicial philosophy she employed to craft her opinions on such issues as a woman’s right to choose, affirmative action, and the separation of church and state. Drawing on exclusive interviews and first-time access to Justice O’Connor’s archives, Thomas creates a remarkably vivid and personal portrait of a woman who loved her family, believed in serving her country, and who, when she became the most powerful woman in America, built a bridge forward for all women.
Kirkus Reviews praises First as an “important biography of a trailblazing woman, the book illuminates its subject’s strength at pinpointing a path forward in complex times.”
Mr. Thomas will be in conversation with Akhil Reed Amar, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale University, and the author of The Constitution Today and other books.
