In December 2011, Nancy Foner organized an international conference at the Russell Sage Foundation, with French demographer Patrick Simon (French National Institute for the Study of Demography),
“Fear and Anxiety over National Identity: Contrasting North American and European Experiences and Public Debates on Immigrant and Second Generation Integration.” The conference brought together a group of distinguished scholars in sociology, history, and political science to discuss and debate critical issues in European and North American societies concerning national identity, diversity, and integration. The revised papers will appear in an edited volume and special journal issue.
